RELAX & RECONNECT

As a typical type A personality, military life suited me. I craved structure, power, and perfection. These traits, though admirable in the military, made life hostile at home with my wife and friends. People kept telling me this wasn’t war so I needed to find some peace. Frustrated and pissed off, an old platoon buddy suggested meditation along with some key takeaways from the Veteran Connections Podcast. Meditation and podcasts were nowhere on my priority list, but feeling hopeless for the first time I could remember, I gave it a try. Today, I’m a weekly listener. I learned how to relax, reconnect with those close to me and how to not take life so seriously. Not sure where I would be today without the Veteran Connections Podcast.

After 16 years of constant deployment, a failed marriage and the loss of too many close comrades, I was an absolute mess when I came home from the service for the last time – a total wreck. Alcohol was my only friend and despite my former military successes, my outlook was looking bleak. It wasn’t until I came across The Veteran Connections Podcast that I realized I wasn’t alone. Others struggled with the same problems and I found comfort in the company. Hearing story after story of regular people overcoming life’s biggest obstacles gave me the strength to get sober and be all I could be. The Veteran Connections changed my life

Intentionally removing harmful issues from our lives is key to our well being. To build resilience we must detach stressors, harmful thoughts, and misbehaviors

When we go through traumatic times, we have to reset our minds like computers with a blue screen, dumping your files needing a reboot

Searching out what you want and making plans for the future is a major part of the transition process. To reach goals you have to plan for them.

Resolve

Start trying to actively solve your problems. We all have them and no one is exempt. Write them down, come up with possible solutions, pick the best solution, then start working on it.

Re-engage

Mentally resilient people learn to get on with it. You move on and you bounce back. By changing your attitude and desires, you stand a much better chance of moving forward much stronger in every area of your life.
